Sui Generis: Debates about the Singular

January 8 - January 22, 2022

Curated by: Khang Bao Nguyen

Artists: Alaïa Parhizi, Alexandra Wiesenfeld, Cheyann Washington, Connie Trevino, Daniel Gerwin, Helen Chung, Isabel Beavers, Jacinto Astiazarán, Khang Bao, Lester Monzon, Maura Bendett, Rebecca Niederlander, Regina Herod, Valerie Wilcox, Zeynep Abes

That which exceeds all determination, classification, and enumeration seems to resist meaningful discourse or to require yet to be established ways of thinking and communication. The singular is not the first of a series, not an instance of a type and not a particular of something general. The problem has a long and complex history, but it also has relevance today when autonomy and particularity discourses abound.  What can we learn from philosophical studies and aesthetic explorations of ways of expressing the singular?

There are longstanding debates in philosophy that have focused on ontological, epistemological, ethical, and aesthetic issues in relation to the singular.

Creative Exchange

October 23- November 6, 2021

Curated by: Adrian White and Anefertiti Bowman

Artists: Rebecca Potts Aguirre, Marina Griffin, Samuel Moleku, Tyler Morney, Aghogho Otega, Davin Sanchez

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 1, 2021) – Join SoLA Contemporary this month, as we usher in the new season with our Creative Exchange program’s inaugural exhibition, Remembering Together. This multidisciplinary show features the work of six emerging artists who, for the past eight months, have engaged in a collaborative creative practice.

Under the guidance of photographer and educator Adrian White, these artists honed their craft by articulating their artistic ethos and offering critique of one other’s work. The result is a show that is grounded in integrity, yet replete with intrigue. The various artworks, which include paintings, photographs, videos, and mixed-media, engage in a dialogue of their own. Remembering Together reads like a conversation between individual artists and their unique mediums, inspirations, and aesthetics. It addresses themes of spirituality, sexuality, ancestry, motherhood, beauty, and empowerment in ways that feel intimate and meditative.

The purpose of Creative Exchange is twofold: to support the careers of emerging artists and, in doing so, enrich the Historic South Central, South Los Angeles community. As part of SoLA’s ongoing partnership with Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, specially-curated artwork from the Remembering Together collection will be displayed at Hilltop’s Slauson Avenue location.

Protest in Place

July 2, 2020 – August 15, 2020

The posters have been collected from a cross section of LA protesters and a few from those who were unable to attend the streets. They are distributed throughout the gallery, floating from above as visitors weave throughout the installation. We hope that the mask and social distancing, a new normal in these COVID-19 times, will create a somber and meditative mood for the limited number of visitors who move through. A subtle soundscape completes the immersive experience, with sounds from LA’s largest protest led by the founders of Black Lives Matter on June 7, 2020.
